This class will provide an overview of important conceptual frameworks and approaches in bioethics. We will examine major approaches by leading bioethics scholars and engage them from a pastoral perspective.
Class Objectives: At the end of this session, participants should be able to:
- Identify and analyze the ethical theories that undergird contemporary bioethics through a pastoral lens
- Understand various theoretical approaches by leading bioethics scholars in the field
- Learn to critically engage these approaches through case study.
- During our two-hour session, the instructor will lecture the first half. During the second half of the session, participants will present their cases in their small-group.
- We invite thoughtful and respectful interactions online and during our session.
- Honor different perspectives, experiences, emotions, responses and positions on the readings and the discussion.
- Ministry contexts and pastoral experience may vary – be prepared to take on a scholar-learner role (“I am an expert in some areas – and a learner in some”).
- Case Presentation: Briefly summarize a case/pastoral encounter that you have experienced in your ministry context. You will present this during your break-out session. In the interest of time, be prepared to read your case that you have written. Submit this assignment via email to Dr. Patricia Murphy (see syllabus for her email address). Include the following:
- Describe your ministry context (1-2 sentences)
- Role (if you have multiple roles, identify each)
- Case (6-8 sentences and must be presented without identifiers)
- Final Paper: Drawing from your readings, lecture and discussion analyze the case that you presented. Submit this assignment via email to Dr. Patricia Murphy (see syllabus for her email address). Address the following components:
- Which principle is applicable to this case and why (6-8 sentences max)
- What is your pastoral response to the case (6-8 sentences max)
- Are your ethical responses and pastoral responses aligned with each other or are they in conflict? Explain why. (6-8 sentences max)
